Once a prominent family business operating as a dry goods and kimono store since the Edo period under the name Tsuruya, the existing building dates back to the Meiji era and features a striking black plaster exterior. The residence is known for its well-preserved architecture and its role in the Makabe Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival), where traditional dolls from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods are displayed.
