Mount Nishi-Azuma, located on the border of Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures, is a popular destination for hiking and enjoying the autumn foliage. The most common route from Yamagata starts at Tengendai Plateau, accessible by ropeway and lifts. While the summit offers limited views due to the surrounding forest, the trails leading up to it boast stunning scenery, especially during the fall when the leaves change color. The area is known for its high-altitude moorlands and alpine plants in the summer. Be aware that the weather can be unpredictable, and the ropeway/lifts have specific operating hours, so plan accordingly. It's a relatively easy climb with the help of the ropeway, but can get crowded on weekends and holidays during peak season.
