The Former Saigo Residence Nagayamon Gate is the largest existing Nagayamon gate in Hikone Castle Town, offering a glimpse into the area's samurai past. Once belonging to the Saigo family, who served as chief retainers to the Ii clan from the early Edo period until the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, this gate showcases the architectural style of a high-ranking samurai residence. Located a 20-minute walk from Hikone Station, the gate features a striking white-walled and black-paneled facade. While the interior is not open to the public, the exterior provides a valuable glimpse into the region's history and is designated as a city cultural property. It's best viewed during the afternoon while exploring the Hikone Castle area.
