Barrier-free facilities: Guide dogs welcome The Hanakatsumi flower is celebrated in classical Japanese poetry, including in the Kokin Wakashu (compiled in 905 AD). The famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) is known to have searched for the 'Hanakatsumi' flower at Asaka Pond until sunset during his journey in 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North.' In 1974, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the city's establishment, Koriyama City designated the 'Hanakatsumi' (scientifically known as 'Hime Shaga') as its official flower. This delicate flower, with its pale purple petals, is a truly enchanting sight.
