Chidokan is the only remaining school facility in Oita Prefecture, founded in 1858 by Kinoshita Toshinari, the 15th lord of the Hiji Domain. Originally located in the Ninomaru area of Hiji Castle, it welcomed both samurai and commoners. Today, visitors can explore the restored building, which once served as a lecture hall, and view exhibits including the desk and writings of Hoashi Banri, one of the three great sages of Bungo. Located a 5-minute walk from JR Yagutani Station and a 5-minute drive from Hiji IC, Chidokan offers a glimpse into the region's educational history and provides scenic views of Beppu Bay. It's an ideal spot for history enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful cultural experience.
