The Hashiori-toge Pass, located in Nakabechō Kinosato, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, is home to the Gyuba-doji Statue, a charming and small stone figure of a child riding a cow and a horse. This statue, approximately 50cm tall, is said to represent Emperor Kazan's journey to Kumano and is a popular spot along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. The pass is accessible via a scenic 20-30 minute hike from the Michi-no-Eki Kumano Kodo Nakahechi, though the trail can be steep in places, making comfortable shoes advisable. The statue itself is nestled among tall cedar trees, offering a peaceful and shaded resting spot. Nearby, you'll also find other stone monuments and a pagoda, adding to the historical atmosphere of the area. It's a great place to experience a small part of the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.
