Dainari Temple

Overview

Dainari Temple, located in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, is the family temple of the Niwa clan and a poignant memorial to the Nihonmatsu Shonentai (boy soldiers). A 20-minute walk from Nihonmatsu Station or a 5-minute drive from the Nihonmatsu Interchange, the temple was founded in 1643. Visitors can pay respects at the graves of the young soldiers who tragically lost their lives during the Boshin War. The temple also features the graves of the Niwa family lords and a memorial tower for the Sendai and Aizu clans who fought in the Boshin War. The gingko trees are especially beautiful in the fall. A visit to Dainari Temple offers a somber yet important glimpse into the history of Nihonmatsu.
