Mugikusa Pass, situated on National Route 299 (the “Meruhen” or Fairy Tale Road), is the second-highest mountain pass on a national highway in Japan. At an elevation of 2,127 meters, it offers access to hiking trails, including those leading to Shirakoma Pond. The Mugikusa Hutte provides a resting spot for hikers and travelers. The pass is especially scenic in summer and autumn, though the road is closed in winter. Be aware that the roads leading to the pass are winding and require careful driving.
