Koriyama Hachiman Shrine, founded in the Kenkyū era (1190-1199), is located in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture. This shrine is known for its unique architectural style, blending elements of the Muromachi and Momoyama periods with Ryukyu influences, earning it designation as a nationally important cultural property. During renovations in 1954, a piece of wood was discovered with the oldest known written record of "shochu," a Japanese distilled spirit, leading some to affectionately call it "Shochu Shrine." The inscription was a complaint from a carpenter about not being offered shochu by the head priest. The shrine is about a 15-minute drive from the Okuchi bus stop. Visitors can explore the grounds and appreciate the historical significance and unique story behind this cultural gem.
