The Chagu Chagu Umakko festival is a unique Iwate tradition where farmers honor their horses for their hard work in agriculture. The horses are adorned in elaborate, colorful costumes with numerous bells, parading from Onikoshi Sozen Shrine in Takizawa to Hachimangu Shrine in Morioka, a 14km journey. The procession of about 100 horses, jingling their bells, is a delightful spectacle. The festival takes place annually on the second Saturday of June. Viewing is free along the route, but arrive early for a good spot, especially in Morioka's city center. It's a charming and memorable cultural experience.
