Nagahama Bridge (Opening Bridge)

Overview

The Nagahama Bridge, also known as the Akabashi (Red Bridge) by locals, is Japan's oldest working movable road bridge. Completed in 1935, this striking red bridge spans 226 meters over the Hiji River in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture. Its 18-meter central section can still open, making it a rare and fascinating example of industrial heritage. While no longer needed for river traffic, the bridge opens every Sunday at 1 PM for tourists and maintenance. Located a 15-minute walk from Iyo-Nagahama Station, it's a must-see for history and engineering enthusiasts, especially when combined with a scenic drive along the "Sunset Coast Line."
