Kojokan

Overview

Kojokan is a historic school founded in 1853 by Katsuji Tomoyama, a magistrate of the Hitotsubashi Tokugawa family, with the aim of educating the children of commoners. He invited Rangyo Sakatani, a scholar of Chinese studies, to establish the school in the Nishiegara domain. Visitors can still see the original lecture hall, school gate, and a red plum tree said to have been planted by Rangyo himself. Today, Kojokan serves as a private high school. It's located a 25-minute walk from Ibara Station. The school gate, with calligraphy by Eiichi Shibusawa, is a highlight. Please obtain permission before visiting and be respectful of the students.
