Yabakei

Overview

Yabakei is a scenic valley in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, known as one of Japan's Three Great Gorges and designated as one of the New Three Views of Japan. This expansive area features stunning landscapes formed by volcanic activity and erosion, including unique rock formations and vibrant autumn foliage. Key attractions include Ao-no-Domon (a historic tunnel), Yabakei Bridge (Japan's longest stone arch bridge), and the panoramic views from Hitome Hakkei in Fukayabakei. Visitors can enjoy driving along the Yamakuni River, cycling, or exploring the various sub-valleys like Okuyabakei and Urayabakei. The best time to visit is during the autumn foliage season in late November, though it can get crowded.
