Visit Nikko-san Chuzen-ji Tachiki Kannon, located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, to see the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva carved by Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko Mountain. The statue is known as Tachiki Kannon because it was carved from a living tree with its roots still attached. Though submerged in Lake Chuzenji by a tsunami in 1902, it miraculously resurfaced. Open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (April-October), 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (November-March), and 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (December-February), with entry fees of ¥200 for elementary and junior high students and ¥500 for adults. Don't miss the stunning views of Lake Chuzenji from the grounds.
