Site of the Meikyokan School

Overview

The Site of the Meikyokan School in Kochi Prefecture marks the location of a former school established by the Fukao clan, rulers of the Sagawa domain, during the mid-to-late Edo period. While the original building no longer stands, a monument commemorates its historical significance. The school's original entrance has been preserved and relocated to the Kamimachi district of Sagawa Town, where it remains in use. Visitors can explore the site and learn about the school's history and notable alumni, including botanist Tomitaro Makino. Located a 5-minute walk from JR Sagawa Station, near the Kochi Shimbun Sagawa Branch, it offers a glimpse into the area's rich educational heritage.
