Overview

The Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Memorial Museum in Asahikawa is Japan's oldest private Ainu museum, founded in 1916 by Kaneto Kawamura to preserve Ainu culture. It showcases Ainu artifacts, tools, and a traditional 'chise' (Ainu house) to illustrate their way of life. Visitors can also see Kawamura's surveying equipment, reflecting his career as a surveyor. Located in Hokumon-cho, it's a 10-minute bus ride from Asahikawa Station (get off at the 'Ainu Memorial Museum' bus stop). Admission is ¥500 for adults. It offers a unique glimpse into Ainu heritage and the history of Hokkaido.
