Site of the Byakkotai Suicide

Overview

Visit the poignant Site of the Byakkotai Suicide on Iimoriyama in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima. This is where the young Byakkotai warriors tragically took their own lives, mistakenly believing Tsuruga Castle had fallen during the Boshin War. The site features a monument, memorial towers, and a statue of a Byakkotai member gazing towards the castle. Though Tsuruga Castle may be partially obscured by modern buildings, the location offers a solemn and reflective experience. Accessible via the 'Haikara-san' loop bus from Aizuwakamatsu Station, followed by a short walk. Remember to visit the nearby grave of Iinuma Sadakichi, the sole survivor of the incident.
