Myoryu-ji Temple, a Nichiren Buddhist temple founded in 1385, is located a 12-minute walk from JR Kamakura Station. Also known as Chiba Residence, it stands on the former estate of the Chiba clan, retainers of the Kamakura shogunate. The temple is part of the Kamakura Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, enshrining Jurōjin, the god of longevity. Noteworthy features include a statue of Nichiren, known as "Nabekamuri Nisshin," who was persecuted for criticizing the shogunate. The temple also has a pond where Nisshin underwent rigorous training. Visit during the cherry blossom season for a peaceful experience away from the crowds.
