Located in Kitakata, the Wakaki Shoten Shimagaki Kura Zashiki offers a glimpse into a unique architectural treasure. This building, part of the historic Wakaki Shoten miso and soy sauce brewery (founded in 1755), features a rare shimagaki (striped persimmon) wood interior within a brick warehouse built in the Meiji era. While visitors cannot enter the Zashiki, it can be viewed from behind glass, showcasing its ceilings, pillars, and other features crafted from the beautifully grained wood. The shop offers explanations and displays related items. The site also includes a retro-style candy shop and other historic buildings, providing a multifaceted experience. Note that the site may be closed in winter for soy sauce preparation.
