The Niekawa Sekisho Checkpoint, located in Shiojiri, Nagano, once served as a crucial control point on the Nakasendo highway, inspecting lumber and women travelers. Today, it's a reconstructed historical site offering insights into Edo-era travel and governance. The on-site museum displays Jomon period pottery and artifacts discovered in the Niekawa area. Easily accessible from the Shiojiri or Ina ICs and a short walk from Niekawa Station, the checkpoint is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (closed Mondays and days after public holidays). Admission is ¥300 for adults, and limited parking is available. A visit here provides a glimpse into the past along the historic Nakasendo trail.
