Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, revered as the first Tenmangu shrine in Japan dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, is easily accessible with a 15-minute walk from Hofu Station. Known as one of Japan's three major Tenjin shrines alongside Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka, it attracts many visitors throughout the year. The shrine is particularly vibrant during the New Year's Hatsumode, the plum blossom festival in early spring, and the Gojinko Festival (Naked Festival) in November, one of western Japan's wildest festivals. The shrine also features cultural properties like the main hall, offering hall, and worship hall, designated as registered tangible cultural properties, and offers barrier-free facilities including wheelchair rentals and accessible restrooms.
