Explore the historic Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force 1st Service School, formerly the Imperial Naval Academy, in Etajima, Hiroshima. Many of the original stone and brick buildings from the Imperial Naval Academy era are still in use. Visit the Education Reference Room to see approximately 1,200 historical items related to the former Japanese Navy, including letters from kamikaze pilots. The site is accessible by a 60-minute car ride from Kure IC, or a 25-minute ferry from Hiroshima Port and a 20-minute ferry from Kure Port. Admission is free, but reservations are required for groups of 20 or more.
