Sekikawa Temple

Overview

Sekikawa Temple, located a 10-minute walk southwest of Shirakawa Station's south exit, is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple with a rich history. The temple grounds feature the graves of Yuki Munehiro, a military commander from the Northern and Southern Courts period, and the wife of Kanzuke Nakamura, one of the Forty-seven Ronin. To the west, you'll find the remains of Sekikawa Temple Castle, including earthen mounds and moats. Originally known as Sekisen-in, it is said to have derived its name from collecting "sekisen" (passage fees). The temple's expansive grounds are covered in trees, creating a solemn atmosphere reminiscent of a mountain castle. During the cherry blossom season, the weeping cherry tree named Yuki-zakura, associated with Yuki Munehiro, is a highlight.
