The Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage, located near Nagashima Station and Kuwana Station in Mie Prefecture, serves as a flood control structure at the mouth of the Nagara River. Completed in 1994, it was built to manage water levels and prevent saltwater intrusion, addressing historical flood concerns in the area. Visitors can observe the unique, evenly spaced round structures that characterize the barrage. While controversial during its construction due to environmental concerns, it now stands as a symbol of the river and can be viewed from the nearby Shichiri-no-Watashi historical site and the Kintetsu train line. The barrage is accessible for walks, offering views of the Nagara River and its surroundings. Nearby, the Aqua Plaza Nagaragawa provides educational exhibits and an observation deck.
