Mount Kuju

Overview

Mount Kuju, also known as Kuju-san, is part of the Kuju Mountain Range in Oita Prefecture and is listed as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The peak stands at 1,787 meters and offers panoramic views, especially of the Aso volcanic range. Access is convenient via the JR Kyudai Main Line to Bungo-Nakamura Station, then a bus to Kuju Tozanguchi, followed by a walk to Makinoto Pass and a 2-hour hike to the summit. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty, including the Kuju Highlands, and is particularly recommended during the summer when the lush greenery and cool breezes create a refreshing experience. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails with views of grazing cows and horses, and the vibrant Miyama Kirishima azaleas bloom around May.
