The Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872, was Japan's first government-run model silk reeling factory and one of the largest in the world. It significantly contributed to the global silk industry through its production and export of raw silk. Today, its well-preserved wooden and brick buildings stand as a testament to Japan's early industrial development and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. Visitors can explore the historic buildings and learn about the silk production process. Located in Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, the mill is a 15-minute walk from Joshu-Tomioka Station. Admission is ¥1000 for adults.
