Kajo Park, located a 10-minute walk from Yamagata Station, is the former site of Yamagata Castle, originally built by Shiba Kaneyori and expanded by Mogami Yoshiaki. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed Ninomaru East Gate and Honmaru Ichimonji Gate, as well as the remaining moats and stone walls. The park is especially beautiful in spring when approximately 1,500 cherry trees are in full bloom, making it a prime cherry blossom viewing spot in the city. Within the park, you'll also find cultural facilities like the Yamagata City Museum (former Saiseikan Main Building) and the Prefectural Museum. The park offers barrier-free access, including accessible parking, ramps, restrooms, and support for guide dogs.
