The Iwahashi House, located a 15-minute walk from Kakunodate Station, offers a glimpse into the life of a mid-ranking samurai family. Once home to a senior vassal of the Ashina clan, the residence was later occupied by the Satake family. This well-preserved house showcases the architectural style of Kakunodate's samurai residences. The roof was converted from thatched to wooden shingles during the Meiji period, which is said to have saved it from a major fire. Don't miss the 300-year-old kashiwa oak tree on the grounds. The site is free to enter and was used as a filming location for the movie "The Twilight Samurai."
