Choukouji Temple, located in Sagae City, is a historic Soto Zen Buddhist temple established in 1489. A notable feature is its impressive Sanmon gate, which was relocated from Sagae Castle's Sannomaru Tatsumi gate. Visitors can admire the temple's serene main hall and the unique ceiling painting above the dedication plaque. The temple grounds also house the graves of the 13th-generation lord of the Sagae clan, Tomohiro Sagae, and his wife. The temple is accessible via narrow streets, so careful driving is advised. Visit during the day to appreciate the architecture and surrounding flora, including beautiful hydrangeas near the stream.
