Ryosen-ji Temple, located a 10-minute walk from Shimoda Station, is historically significant as the site where the Treaty of Shimoda was concluded. This pivotal agreement opened Japan to the world. The temple features the MOBS Kurofune Museum, showcasing a collection related to Perry, the Black Ships, and the cultural exchange of the late Edo period. Known as the "Jasmine Temple," it's particularly beautiful in late May when the American jasmine is in full bloom. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, view the Black Ship art on the main hall, and even see a cave tomb. It's a must-visit for history enthusiasts exploring Shimoda.
