The Horikawa Canal in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, was constructed in 1686 by order of the Obihan lord Ito Suketane to transport Obisugi cedar from the Hiroto River estuary to Aburatsu Port. Stroll along the canal, admiring the historic stone bridge, Horikawa Bridge, a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The canal area offers a glimpse into the past, with well-preserved townscapes and historical buildings like the Aburatsu Brick Museum and Sugimura Hardware Store nearby. It's a pleasant spot for a leisurely walk and to experience the retro atmosphere of Aburatsu, also known as a filming location for the "Tora-san" movie series. Access is a 15-minute walk from JR Nichinan Line Aburatsu Station. The best time to visit is during the day to fully appreciate the scenery.
