Located on Uomachi Street, the Former Hasegawa Jirobe Residence, also known as Tanbaya, was once a prominent cotton wholesaler during the Edo period. This well-preserved merchant house showcases the prosperity of Matsusaka merchants with its latticework, rain shutters, five storehouses, and an elevated roof with fire-resistant walls. Designated as a nationally important cultural property and a prefecturally designated historic site and scenic spot, it offers a glimpse into the past. The residence is a 10-minute walk from JR and Kintetsu Matsusaka Station. You can also take the Mie Kotsu bus towards Matsusaka Central Hospital and get off at the City Hall stop, which is about a 3-minute walk away. It's approximately 10 minutes from the Matsusaka IC on the Ise Expressway. A visit here provides insight into the lives of wealthy merchants and their contributions to the region.
