Venture slightly off the beaten path in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, to discover the serene Gohyaku Rakan (500 Arhats). These weathered stone carvings, each with a unique expression, are nestled among moss-covered rocks along a mountain path. Created roughly 200 years ago by Gisan Oshō of Daiji Temple, the statues honor those who perished in the region's great famine. Allow about 30 minutes to explore the site, which involves a short uphill walk through a wooded area. The best time to visit is on a clear day to fully appreciate the tranquil atmosphere. Access is easiest by car, with parking available near Atago Shrine, followed by a 10-minute walk. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for the sometimes-steep terrain.
