Shuri Castle

Overview

Shuri Castle, once the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom's political and cultural life since the late 14th century, has undergone multiple cycles of destruction and restoration, including its devastation during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Reconstructed in November 1992, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000 as part of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." Although a fire caused significant damage in October 2019, restoration efforts are underway. Visitors can explore the ongoing reconstruction, view exhibits of recovered artifacts, and learn about the castle's history. Located in Naha, Okinawa, it's accessible by bus or monorail to Shuri Station, followed by a walk. Admission fees apply, with discounts for groups and students.
