Saimyō-ji (Ikidera)

Overview

Saimyō-ji, also known as Ikidera (Pond Temple), is a Tendai Buddhist temple and one of the Koto Sanzan. This temple flourished as a center for prayer and ascetic practice through the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi periods. The main hall and three-story pagoda, constructed without using a single nail, are designated as National Treasures. The temple is also home to the rare Fudanzakura cherry trees that bloom in autumn, offering a unique opportunity to see cherry blossoms and autumn leaves simultaneously. Located in Kora Town, Inukami District, Shiga Prefecture, it is accessible by bus or car from Kawase Station and a short drive from Hikone IC and Koto Sanzan Smart IC.
