Kotoku-in (Kamakura Great Buddha)

Overview

Kotoku-in Temple, home to the iconic Kamakura Great Buddha, is a must-see destination in Kamakura. This bronze statue, standing over 13 meters tall (including the base) and weighing 121 tons, is a designated National Treasure. Originally cast in 1252 and once housed in a grand hall, the Buddha now sits serenely in the open air after earthquakes and tsunamis destroyed the hall. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the statue's gentle expression, and even venture inside the Buddha for a small fee (when available). Located in Hase, it's easily accessible via a short walk from Hase Station on the Enoden line or a bus ride from Kamakura Station. Visit during the day to fully appreciate this impressive landmark.
