Anrakuji Temple in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest Zen temples. It's home to a unique, nationally-designated Important Cultural Property: the wooden octagonal three-storied pagoda, the oldest of its kind in Japan. Located in Bessho Onsen, the temple is a 15-minute walk from Bessho Onsen Station on the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho Line, or a 30-minute drive from Ueda Sugadaira IC. The temple grounds are open year-round, and the pagoda can be viewed for an admission fee of ¥300. The temple offers a serene atmosphere with beautiful grounds, making it a worthwhile visit alongside the nearby Kitamuki Kannon Temple.
