Okama Crater, located in the Zao Mountain Range straddling Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures, is a stunning volcanic crater lake known for its ever-changing emerald green waters. Surrounded by the peaks of Mt. Katta, Mt. Kumano, and Mt. Goshiki, the lake's color shifts with the sunlight, creating a mystical atmosphere. Access is via the Zao Echo Line and Zao High Line (toll road), followed by a short walk from the parking area. Be prepared for variable weather conditions at this altitude (1,600m), with temperatures often much cooler than in the surrounding areas, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The best time to visit is on a clear day to fully appreciate the vibrant colors of the lake, but even on misty days, the views can be dramatic. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the rocky paths around the crater. Note that the roads may be closed during winter months.
