Kashima Jingu Deer Park

Overview

Located within the grounds of Kashima Jingu Shrine in Kashima, Ibaraki, the Kashima Jingu Deer Park is home to a herd of deer considered sacred. Established in 1957 with deer from Nara's Kasuga Shrine and Tokyo's Kanda Shrine, the park offers visitors a chance to observe these revered animals in a serene setting. While direct interaction is limited to feeding times with purchased feed, the park provides a unique glimpse into the cultural significance of deer in Japanese Shinto tradition. The deer park is located near the main shrine complex and the szaezare-ishi (national anthem stones), making it a convenient addition to your shrine visit. Note that dogs are not allowed near the deer, as they are known to frighten the animals. The park is managed by Kashima Jingu Shrine.
