The Kanmon Straits, a narrow waterway approximately 700 meters wide, separates Shimonoseki City and Kitakyushu City's Moji Ward. Historically significant as a stage for pivotal moments in Japan's transition from medieval to modern times, the straits feature a rapid current that changes four times daily. Today, around 700 ships navigate these waters, and the combined sounds of the tide and ship horns have been recognized as one of Japan's treasured soundscapes. Visitors can explore the straits via the Kanmon Bridge or the underwater Kanmon Tunnel. The Mimosusogawa Park on the Shimonoseki side offers historical statues and replica Choshu cannons, providing a glimpse into the area's rich past. It's easily accessible by bus from JR Shimonoseki or JR Shin-Shimonoseki Stations.
