The Niōmon Gate is located midway up the 1,015 stone steps of Yamadera Temple in Yamagata. Rebuilt in 1848, this impressive gate is crafted from Japanese zelkova wood and houses two imposing Niō guardian statues, said to be made by disciples of the renowned sculptor Unkei, watching over those who enter. The gate marks a significant point on the path to the Okunoin and other temple structures. Many suggest that the best views of the gate can be seen from below, near the Mida-hora cave, or from slightly higher up the path on the way back down. The surrounding maple trees offer beautiful foliage in early November, making it a popular photo spot.
