Ioryozan Onsenji Temple is a serene temple in Gero Onsen, known for enshrining the Yakushi Nyorai statue from the White Heron legend. According to local lore, a white heron, the incarnation of Yakushi Nyorai, revealed a new hot spring source to villagers when the original one stopped flowing. Established in 1671 as a Zen temple, it's also the burial site of Kyubei Takekawa, who contributed to the development of Hokkaido. Visitors can climb the 173 stone steps to enjoy panoramic views of Gero. During the autumn foliage season, the temple is illuminated, offering a magical nighttime experience.
