Kotsuchi Shrine

Overview

Kotsuchi Shrine, with roots tracing back to the early Edo period, is located in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. Originally situated on Mt. Shinzan, it is said to enshrine Saburo Yoshikata, a pioneer of the region. The shrine is a 10-minute walk from Otsuchi Station on the Sanriku Railway Rias Line and a 5-minute walk from the Yakubamae bus stop. Notably, the shrine miraculously survived a major fire following a tsunami, with visible fire damage remaining on its torii gate. Visitors can also admire a large sacred fir tree and various smaller shrines within the grounds. The shrine holds an annual festival on September 23rd.
