Akama Shrine in Shimonoseki is dedicated to Emperor Antoku, who perished in the Battle of Dan-no-ura. Its striking vermilion-lacquered Water Gate, reminiscent of a dragon palace, faces the Kanmon Straits. Key highlights include the graves of the Heike clan, the Hoichi Hall (famous from the tale of Hoichi the Earless), and a treasure hall with valuable artifacts. The shrine is the main venue for the Seitei-sai Festival on May 3rd, known for the Joro procession. The shrine is easily accessible by bus from Shimonoseki Station or Shin-Shimonoseki Station. The shrine is lit up at night, and admission is free.
