Okadera Temple, formally known as Ryugai-ji, is a Shingon Buddhist temple of the Buzan sect and the seventh temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Known as Japan's first temple for protection against bad luck, it features the Dragon Lid Pond, said to contain a dragon. The temple's main attraction is the seated statue of the Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva, an Important Cultural Property and Japan's largest clay sculpture. Visit in spring to see the 3,000 azalea bushes in bloom. Located in Asuka, Nara, it's accessible by bus from Kashiharajingu-mae or Asuka Stations. Note that the temple is situated on a hill, requiring a 10-minute walk from the bus stop.
