Discover the Gyokusien Tanimura Art Museum in Itoigawa, Niigata, showcasing the wood carvings of Masahiro Sawada within a building designed by renowned architect Togo Murano, inspired by Silk Road desert ruins. Note that one of the Buddhist statues inside the Tanimura Art Museum was damaged in the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake and is currently undergoing repairs (expected to take an undetermined amount of time). During the repair period, admission will be reduced by 100 yen. Adjacent to the museum is the expansive Gyokusien Garden, opened in 1981, featuring stunning views of the surrounding mountains and incorporating two rivers. An 8-meter tall Kannon statue marks the entrance. Easily accessible by bus from Itoigawa Station or a 10-minute drive from the Itoigawa IC.
