Kasadō

Overview

Kasadō, also known as the Umbrella Hall, is a unique and historically significant structure located near Taima-dera Temple in Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture. Built in 1674 to honor Lord Honda Masakatsu, it features a distinctive umbrella-like shape with a single central pillar supporting the roof. This unusual design, resembling a "karakasa kozō" (umbrella goblin), makes it a rare and fascinating sight. Accessible via a 30-minute walk from Taimadera Station on the Kintetsu Minami Osaka Line, Kasadō offers a glimpse into Edo-period architecture and local cultural heritage. Visitors can also obtain a special stamp (Goshuin) of Kasado at Sekko-ji Temple. The hall is especially vibrant during the Taimarenza festival, adorned with colorful banners.
