Matsumae Castle, also known as Fukuyama Castle, is the northernmost Japanese-style castle in Japan, located in Matsumae Town, Hokkaido. Originally built in 1606 by Matsumae Yoshihiro, the castle features a reconstructed keep (the original burned down in 1949) that now serves as a museum showcasing the history of the Matsumae clan and Ainu artifacts. The castle is famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms, with over 10,000 trees of various species, making it a popular destination during the spring cherry blossom festival. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, including the original castle gate, a designated Important Cultural Property. Located a 10-minute walk from Matsushiro Bus Stop, it's an ideal spot to experience history and nature.
