Haguro-san Gojū-no-Tō

Overview

Located past the clear stream of the Harai River, the Haguro-san Gojū-no-Tō (five-story pagoda) stands at 29 meters tall. This elegant structure, constructed with unpainted wood and a shingle roof, is reminiscent of a white bird taking flight. As the oldest five-story pagoda in the Tōhoku region, it's believed to have been founded by Taira no Masakado in the Heian period and was restored in 1608 by Yoshimitsu Mogami. The pagoda is nestled within a grove of ancient cedar trees, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Visit in the early morning to avoid crowds and fully appreciate its beauty, especially when snow-covered.
