Tennon Kotoku Temple

Overview

Tennon Kotoku Temple, originally founded as Katsudo Temple in the early 9th century, is located a short 5-minute walk from Shirakawa Station. The temple is renowned for the unique grave of Shojyo Ohara, a figure from the famous Aizu Bandai-san folk song, whose tombstone is shaped like a sake bottle and cup. Additionally, the temple is the resting place of Chu Kikuchi, a member of the Shinsengumi who died in the Battle of Shirakawa. The temple grounds offer a tranquil environment with seasonal flowers, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in history and local culture.
